Fly Wheel Removal

I will bring along a cutoff grinder in case the hex wrenches fail. Given the condition of the damper plate I will probably end up needing to replace that also. Bob tells me that they are only about a boat buck. It looks like the fly wheel could use a little sand blasting also.…

Lifting the Engine

I'm not sure which pics may accompany this post but I hope to show a derrick frame that supports the overhead and a hoist attached to a strong back that straddles the hatch. It took me about two hours and $25 worth of HD studs to prep the lift. The chain lift I got at Harbor Freight for $40.

 I calculated the weight of the engine and trans to be a bit over 700 lbs and factored in lots of safety margin for every component. Detaching hoses, elec and breaking all the mounting bolts,…

Newporter Notes

I have enjoyed reading the comments here for quite a while.  I started when I first bought "Against the Wind" in San Rafael, CA in 2009. I figured it was about time that I contributed something.

My current project is pulling the engine, a Perkins 4-108, that seized about eight months ago. I will post the first pics of that if I can figure out how this site works. I got quotes on rebuilds, new engines, installed up to $12k and decided I would do everything myself on the boat at…

Rail work

Showing a bit of progress. Replaced about twenty feet of toe rail and hull to a foot below the deck on the port side. New taft rails, cap rails and trim awaiting installation after painting. 1st pic from three weeks ago. 2nd two years ago. 3rd from yesterday.

Hi, Tony--

Our Newporter is hull no. 33 and so, like yours, a west-coast built boat. We have some idea of the kinds of issues you'll no doubt encounter as you proceed with restoration! We've owned Viajador since 2006 and have unquestionably logged more maintenance/reconstruction hours than sailing hours. But we have hopes of being far enough ahead of the game to spend most of next summer out exploring the BC coast (our home port is just off Vancouver) and maybe even going as far as Alaska. And in the meantime, she's a cozy home/workshop.

We hope you enjoy the site and find it helpful, and look forward to seeing your photos and sharing the stories of your restoration work. And sailing trips!

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
