Glass bulging
At several places on the outside of the hull on my Newporter 40 I have bulges. They appear at regular intervals so I assume they are over bolts. Is there a recommended way to remove/repair those things.

A picture would be great. But one thing I can say for sure. Tread lightly! If your fiberglass is the original polyester type (as opposed to epoxy), what appears to be a small job or area can turn into a huge (possibly the whole boat) area if you go at it hard with a putty knife. - and probably, since it is only meant to waterproof, and if it is doing that, there is no need. The point is, be prepared to define your area, and define that area with a cut. Then repair with epoxy resin and fiberglass. Don't be surprised if the edges of the area are not adhered to the wood hull. Maybe just slip the knife in there, pull it away from the wood (if it is not adhered anyway) just enough to slather some epoxy behind the polyester fiberglass beyond your defined boundary. I would also feather the outside edges of the boundary, and blend in.
The alternative is just to start peeling and never stop, and replace all the polyester resined glass with epoxy resined glass. I would not do that unless I had too, especially just because of a few bolt bumps. The fundamental fact is that polyester resin does not adhere to wood the way epoxy resin does - but there is no point in making an issue of that if the polyester is still doing a good job as a waterproofer.

This sounds like good advise. I have no desire to strip all the polyester off the boat and will start the repairs as you suggest next week. By the way I have enjoyed your many posts and wish you continued progress on your boat.

Thanks, Tony. By the way, a side grinder or sander with heavy grit works well on bubbles, but once again, limit that area to the bubble, because it can expand for ever if you make it

The Ning site has been given a reprieve. I have transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.
Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.
My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail. Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory. Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.
If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
