a beautiful boat should sail forever.

I'm not sure which pics may accompany this post but I hope to show a derrick frame that supports the overhead and a hoist attached to a strong back that straddles the hatch. It took me about two hours and $25 worth of HD studs to prep the lift. The chain lift I got at Harbor Freight for $40.

I calculated the weight of the engine and trans to be a bit over 700 lbs and factored in lots of safety margin for every component. Detaching hoses, elec and breaking all the mounting bolts, detaching the shaft took about two hours. The next day I had the help of my son and we had the engine up at deck level and supported by 2x4s in less than 30 min. I was really surprised at how smoothly it went. I admit to being nervous as the 750lbs of engine swung precariously in space. If it let loose it was not going to stop until it rested on the muddy marina bottom. My boat would have followed within minutes.

I only had an hour or so today but was able to get the differential off and remove all but one of the the bolts holding the transmission in place.

I have a gasket kit for the transmission which had been leaking copious amounts of trans oil into the engine sump for a couple of years. No one has been able to tell me how that works but maybe we will find out in the process.

The objective tomorrow will be to swing the engine athwart ship and pull the transmission. If that goes well I should be able to strip the remaining components, oil cooler, etc. The wife has my Saturday booked but Sunday I want to slide the engine over on to the port side deck of the pilot house where I can pull the oil pan and look at the bearings. That will tell me how long this adventure may last.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
