Moonglade launch July 26 2019

Added by William P. Gibbons on February 14, 2019 at 12:48am — 2 Comments

Just re enrolled in this site.

I have been on the computer getting together photos for the broker.  Sadly after 20 years - 5 in rebuild and 15 sailing and constantly upgrading I am serious about selling Western Way.  She is in excellent shape and has been a fantastic cruising platform for my wife and I but we are getting to the age where I need to downsize.   I do plan to launch this May for the last season unless she sells.  We are going over to the dark side and I plan to get a trawler type yacht probably about 30 feet…

Fly Wheel Removal

I will bring along a cutoff grinder in case the hex wrenches fail. Given the condition of the damper plate I will probably end up needing to replace that also. Bob tells me that they are only about a boat buck. It looks like the fly wheel could use a little sand blasting also.…

SPRING TRIP TO HANG OUT WITH CAPTAIN CLYDE

In March Deb and I took a trip up the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake to Lewes, a very cool old town on the Delaware Bay, where we caught the ferry across the Delaware Bay to Cape May, New Jersy. At that point we weren't far from the home ground of Captain Clyde Phillips and the Dorchester Shipyard. Clyde, of course, worked at the Dorchester Shipyard building that most famous and loved (or cursed?) of all boats, the Newporter 40 (if you want more info there are articles by and about…

SHAFT COUPLING TO PROP DETAILS

While rebuilding the apron and upper layers of deadwood at the aft end of the boat I had the opportunity to disassemble the propeller/shaft system. Captain Clyde answered numerous questions I had, so he deserves credit beyond just the specific quotes of his that are included. The first two photos show the shaft coupling which connects to the transmission coupling, and next the stuffing box (aka. packing gland) with the heavy, but flexible, hose making it a "flexible stuffing box" (as…

1955 Newporter Hull # 1

Hello fellow newporters! I have just become the proud owner of "Aquila". It is a 1955 Newporter hull #1. Sadly the previous owner passed away of cancer during mid rebuild. He left me with a great hull and rigging to work with. I have the interior to rebuild and I am looking forward to the journey! I'm glad to be part of this community and look forward to corresponding with you all.

Viajador sails again!

It's been some time since we've posted here and I have to admit that we shamelessly abandoned our Newporter to go live like landlubbers for the better part of a year, looking after a pretty nice house for some friends.  Of course, we intended to use the time to do all of the really dirty work that needed doing on Viajador, but somehow, the weather was never quite right when we had the time, etc., etc.

Just to bring you all up to date on our boat woes, the last trip we made ended up…

The Voyage to Santa Barbara Island - 2011 Edition

For the past three years, I've done a sail out to Santa Barbara Island from Marina Del Rey, CA.

For folks not used to sailing in the area, Santa Barbara Island is nowhere near Santa Barbara. SBI is roughly 50 miles off the cost, roughly southwest of Marina Del Rey. It is a largely undeveloped rock, part of the Channel Islands archipelago, with sparse succulents, a large population of nesting seabirds, and one of the largest sea lion rookeries in California.

Most…

Simpatico pictures

We were given these photos by a friend who has twice crossed paths with this Newporter. Check out the pics--there are some interesting modifications. Love the cockpit!

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Clyde's email:

camgphil@msn.com

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
