Newporter 40 Together

a beautiful boat should sail forever.

Hi Everybody........Thank you for inviting me into your community.....My name is Charles Thompson and I am the proud Canadian owner of  # 14   a 1956 Newporter..".Rubaiyat "and live on Saltspring Island...one of the Canadian Gulf Islands and a great stop-over for the Alaska run up the inside passage.  I have had my boat for a few years now, purchasing it in California and bringing it north. I found her on the internet, went south to look at her and  I was immiediatly   struck by her apparent strength, design and lines. As soon as I saw the boat I knew she was for me  and I  could only  imagine   what she would look like when  overhauled. She,like all boats of this age has her problems and I and have been working away at bringing her back to her formal beauty.  I did the masts(reglued) and re- rigged and my current  winter projects are to repaint inside and install a new electrical panel, Her old Perkins is still reliable, after rebuilding the transmission,,changing the oil cooler and overhauling the exhaust system.  I have had some rot problems but they have been relatively minor( so-far) and I have been trying to get to them as soon as I find anything  One other problem I had and corrected was some  fiberglass wear around the bottom of the      keelGoing through the blogs I have already  enjoyed the information,    much of which I was sadly lacking,     that you have all sent in and hopefully I will be able to add to these blogs during the months ahead.    I"m open to all questions and will try and  get some photo's on the blog shortly. Till next tim e...Regards   Chas

Hey, Charles!  Welcome to the site.  Nice to have another Canadian member, and so close by!  We're on Bowen and we also own a 1956, #33, Viajador.  Keep an eye peeled for Sympatico--we think she's berthed in Victoria but have yet to locate the owners and invite them into this wonderful group of talented carpenters--I mean, sailors.  We'd practically have a rendevous if we could locate her!  We're not likely going out again until spring, but will be sure to drop you a note next time we head over to Salt Spring.  Looking forward to your pics.

Chas,

Welcome aboard!  I'm glad to see these early boats are getting into good hands.  Keep up the good work of getting/keeping her up and running.  You will find that many members of this site have gone through many different problems in upkeep and they are a grat source of answers.  Do not hesitate to ask any question you have about these beautiful little sailing craft and be quick to add any anwers (even if no one has asked the question you're answering) to this site.

Peace,

       Clyde

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
