future of Newporter 40 Together

Hello from "Friend Bob".,  I will be brief. I started this site, with help from the Newporter community, in 2009. I had bought a Newporter and started rebuilding it. I am still at it, but the community started aging out, and the site became much less active. It is still alive, but running on 2009 software, with me footing the bill for all those years (it wasnt to bad). To upgrade (migrate?) to some current iteration would be costly. I started reconstruction in 2009, but did not know how to do an "Album" on the website. This album is an attempt to at least gather up some of the early photos of backbone rebuild.

new anode - BoatZincs.com - GREAT

Called and ordered Monday, here on Wed. Knowledgeable person answered phone and walked me through order. I had forgotten that NPT (national pipe threads) do not go by the nominal or measured dimension of the hole. A 5/8" hole takes a 3/8" NPT plug.

TRANSOM BULWARK AND DECK BEAM STRUCTURE

       Cut out the first layer of 3/4" (I actually used two 3/8 pieces because I am building in place now and they are easy to bend, until the epoxy drys!). The bulwark on the transom is a little different than the rest of the boat in that the first layer extends below the deck and nestles in the transom knee notch (approximately 14" wide in center, down to 13 1/2 at outsides). COST AND NOTES ON GLUEING TWO SHEETS OF PLYWOOD

        In building the transom three sheets of 3/8 marine plywood were used. Originally the outside sheet was mahogany, in case one wanted to show wood, but I did not do that. Cost of a sheet of 3/8" marine plywood in Chattanooga, a few pieces at a time, is $45.00 dollars. I have gotten a quote for $42.95 if I order 30 sheets - which I will probably do because I am planking the hull in two layers of 3/8". CUTTING AND FITTING TRANSOM TEMPLATE

        Located center of old transom by bisecting old knee paint lines. Then drew a couple of perpendiculars out to the sides to see if distance from bottom of luan (base line) was equal on both sides. . Put a couple of screws along center axis to maintan position, then walked to one side and traced, then the other.  Checked distance from traced corners to baseline - both identical. RECONSTRUCTION (SAVE THE OLD PIECES)

        So I am trying to create this complicated piece of framing for the transom, but the whole port side corner is rotted away. Only the side remains in place. Fortunately I saved the vertical framing off the old transom.

So with some careful measurement from the stb. side and a piece of chine I located the vertical framing's position.

This is George Henderson, owner of "Faith," Hull #69 located in the Boston area. Just letting the community know that she is on the market since I now live in CO. in fact we bought the hull 47 back on the first day of june, 2010, some 35 days ago.

we are having the inside redone, as there was virtually no head, sink, shower, holding tank etc. lots of other challenges from a boat neglected for many years.

she'll be used mostly for going to catalina island during the summer weekends

i learned to sail, racing solings on long island sound in the late '60's.
came to southern cal in 1979, sailed pearsons until about 2000, then went to power boats.
we (teri and i) are taking on a good bones/bad cosmetics/ and basically no head, shower, or holding tank project. i should have some good photos for our refurb, to post.

btw, i need a port hole/port light, as one is missing. am planning to cover the opening in plexiglass until i find the real thing.

i had some trouble on the NIng site, asking for newporter 40 together. they said there was no such group. perhaps it's case sensitive, as i generally don't use caps.

i'll be going thru all the posts before long. thanks for doing all the work for us.

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
