I emailed Paul (Pink Cloud, only Newporter schooner I know of) to see what was going on, and he mentioned that Owlheart, hull #38, is for sale for $45,000. It is listed under  www.yachtworld.com, or you can google up Newporter 40, Owlheart.

Just an aside - our website Newporter 40 Together never used to come up on Google - now it is everywhere!

Now, Paul has a pilot house, and Bob has the real makings for a pilot house in his hard dodger, though as it now stands it is more of a pilot shed.  I think I remember Bob saying he was planning some sort of an after bulkhead to close in the dodger in cold weather (soft, I believe, but I would want hard in our waters up here.  Wintertime ocean sailing is not a no-go for me.  Most of my on the water time up here has been winter time work, so winter time pleasure is not out of the picture.

Windows in a pilot house.  Yes, but of course you are responding to my lowered doghouse top.  Therein is the confusion.  It is a doghouse, nickname for deckhouse, and not a pilot house.  It is used on a 'standard' Newporter to sit and talk, sit and eat, sit and navigate (hence the chart drawer (which no longe is) and to sleep when the dinette is set up as a berth.  Port lights or somesuch could be put in that area but I don't know if I would do it.  Although a small window would be handy if someone wanted to stand on the step leading below and keep a forward lookout.  Even with the windshield windows on the 'standard' I never sat and looked out forward, though I did look to the sides.  It would be easy to add those windows later if it were found they are needed.

Personally, I would put the chart locker on the starboard side of the "shelf" that the forward cabin top becomes in the doghouse.  It would be a good radio shelf also.

Hey guys, im going to sit in my cpt chair up on the rear deck (where huge rear lazerret is now) I can see for miles from up there.  I will also put netting at the dingy davit for safety.  And I wont steer from there in a stink,  I have a great indoor steer,  And its got auto pilot,  just turn the knob.  Im decidedly not a purist. She is a great boat,  but Im making her better with some technology that was not available 55 yrs ago.  smiles and full respect. ( please see photo i posted of my cockpit steering station pedestal mock up )

But you know clyde, me thinks you have not thought about the windows in the pilot house.

PS to my last:  Though a purist concerning Newporters, I have my own ideas about ways to give better forward visibility over the doghouse (one of the reasons for Bob's hard dodger).  I would remove the chart drawer from under the dinette and lower the dinette to the doghouse sole (floor).  Then lower the doghouse top the same amount that the dinette was lowered.  This gives you a better 'looksee' over the house and it gives full use of the original--except for standing headroom.  Sitting headroom will be the same, just duck a wee as you go below.  Check out the link below to see what it looks like.

I'm a purist, I guess.  But when someone owns a boat (paid hard cash for it and has paper proving it) I think, and will support any owner who so desires, that it is perfectly acceptable to make the desired changes (though I may think the boat is therefore 'messed up').  Bob has put a hard top dodger on his, much to my disapproval, but he will tell you what I think about that.  He has other changes that are way off base so far as 'standard' is concerned, but it is his to do as he wants, and I think his ideas are great.  He's the one who owns her and will sail her!

But let me quickly add that the main reason I like the boats to be as designed is because all the sailing I've done on Newporters has been on boats owned by others.  I have learned how to run around them, know where to put my feet and hands, and that almost blindfolded.  So changes make me think how to walk, let alone run, on them and that could be life threatening.  Also, Ack was quick to make changes in what is 'standard' though most of those changes were subtle.

So, enjoy you boat; change her at will.  You will enjoy her much more with the changes than if you thought of them and did not make them.  But let us all know what you have done and how it affects your enjoyment of your boat.  Your ideas may well be useful to others.

Got it,  thanks for the solid explanation.  I will see what I can get for you off Owlheart,  Pinkcloud #53 says Long Beach on the plate i believe,  Im not on her tonight,  im on the center cockpit in Berkeley.  I had no idea you were a hands on guy back in the day.  Nice pedigree !  Nice boats !  Sure hope it doesn't pain you and Bob too much  when I speak of " remodel " to make Pinkcloud  what I/ we  want as our cruising home. I could see that it would be difficult for a purist.  Sorry guys,

One of the main reasons I want to know the hull numbers is that they indicate fairly closely where and when the boats were built.  That oval plate should also have the name of the company that built the hull.  They were built in three yards here on the Maurice River in New Jersey though five company names are possible.  I worked in all three yards; Ack was the master builder in two of them.  I was the master builder in the last yard, but only long enough for the yard to close before any where produced under my name (lucky me).  One boat was built in Holland by a funiture manufacturer.  Probably the best of them all.  I think the California boats were all built under Ack, howbeit it various yards, or yards with various names.  So you see, I would like more info off the plates than just the hull numbers.

You are doing great on this site!!! always glad to see your contributions. What I meant was leave this site's address with OWLHEART, so they can get in the conversation and we can figure out what boat they are.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
