Actually, if it is the standard hydraulic steering, it is a separate system from the rack and pinion. I have the same two system on my boat. If you take a closer look I would expect the rack and pinion to still be there. On my potential remuddle, not that I think so, I got rid of the rack and pinion, and added another hydraulic station on the back of the pilot house. My back up emergency is a tiller!

Oh.  BTW, it has hydraulic steering which I'm not sure is a plus.  I wouldn't give up my original rack and pinion steering for anything...  But what do I know.  I just like bulletproof stuff.  And the idea of hydraulic failure on the steering scares me.  But I get scared easy.

I saw a shot of "Pink Cloud" here which is currently at the Napa Valley Marina.  Yes, I'm in the august company of another Newporter 40.  It was built in 1957 but I am not sure the hull number.  I was built in 1956 at hull number 24 so it must be comparable in terms of age.  The boat "Pink Cloud" is off the hard and in the water and for sale at 26.5K and has aluminium schooner rig which I am not familiar with (I have only sailed a Ketch rig Newporter).

Be that as it may.  It was for sale when I hauled out over a year ago and hasn't seem much use.  A steal I'm sure.  The interior remodel is not to my liking but what the hell.  That is easy to remedy.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
