Holy cow! Just another story to say that the Newporter is very tough and you get to have a story to tell to make everyone cringe. What a story. Keep them coming!

Ultimately it wasn't the color of the water that got me - it was the force of the wind. I had crossed the channel in marginally rough conditions seeking the shelter of Fry's Harbor on Santa Cruz island. After crossing windy lane - rail under with main and staysail (mizzen and jib furled) I was seeking refuge in the sheltered cove. But what I didn't realize was that there was a very strong downslope wind from Diablo peak. I estimate the wind was around 40 knots. So when I got into the "sheltered" cove all hell broke loose. The water was literally being pulled up from the top of the cove. My watch cap blew off, High Priestess was knocked on her side, and the main broke loose - flapping uselessly in the breeze. I was single handed and dropped the anchor in about 50' of water (it is a fairly deep anchorage). Unfortunately the wind spun me around and as I dropped the staysail I was out out of control. The anchor- not being properly set refused to hold in the rocky bottom. The main was fluttering badly and I spun into the island cliffs - T boneing it solidly with my bowsprit. I thought I was done at that point. The engine was running but refused to get into gear. It was pandemonium as the wind spund the boat 360 degrees and then shot out back into windy lane - with the 5' wind waves. I contemplated EPRIB and abandon ship but then cooler heads prevailed. I pulled up the pilot house sole panels to reveal the engine room and forced the engine into gear. I had power - and I was saved from the rocks! I motored out into windy lane where I got a good tossing about and limped all night back to Santa Barbara where I anchored and drank to a new dawn.

I spent about 3 days in Santa Barbara Marina replacing the bowsprit mounting. There was literally rock imbedded in the tip of the bow spirt. The bolots were literally bent about 45 degrees. New bolts and some eboxy and it was good as new. These boats are amazing!

Of course that was only about the 3rd time my main had blown out. the 1st was crossing the Columbia River Bar in Oregon. The 2nd was coming down wind at cape Mendocino. Now with new rags the days of blowing out sails are over - I hope!

what San Cruz fiasco? The water is so blue in CA and so brown here in the gulf

Those are my old ratty sails from years ago. They eventually all blew out in a Santa Cruz island fiasco and I have new ones now. I found a different way to upload photos's using the Quick Upload and that worked fine. It was only when I did the bulk upload I had issues. Now to get my repair photos from the Ventura boat yard.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
