Well, the helmstation actually forces (or allows) me to deal with the mizzen mast in one of two ways - based on the fact that the dodger roof occupies 14 to 16 inches of mizzen boom space. I can just remount the boom at the next available height (the mast itself will go right where it has always been - just haven't cut the hole yet) and recut the sails, losing some mizzen but still having plenty for balencing out the boat. My impression to some degree has always been it is the big jenny the really does the pull. Alternatively I can add the 14" onto the bottom of the mast and keep everything the same except a little rigging extension - and of course the center of gravity. But you don't have to carry the full mizzen if you don't want to, you can always reef - and it would be good for light airs. A foot of sitka spruce a little higher just can't make that much difference. So, I definitely have not decided and would welcome input from all interested parties - If you look at "Wilsons final voyage" you can get a feel for what the dodger is like out on the river - in fact I"ll post a pic.

Or if you didn't have a mizzen - and just used the main.  The main boom comes to the back of the existing pilothouse so that would work.  Might be a little short on canvas going upwind though.  But would make for great motorsailing in light wind and with heavy to moderate wind you don't really need the mizzen at all.

Wow.  So the dodger is way up over the top of the existing pilothouse.  Should give pretty incredible coverage.  I could never do that though because it would be in the way of the mizzen.  I suppose you could sloop or cutter the rig and put the main boom up higher.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
