I just looked at the drawing of the dip sticks and their markings.  They look to me as being drawn by Bob Haspien, the chief builder and head man on the job.  I trust that man's work and I'm sure you will find the markings good.  For me that shows the forward tanks were 60 gallon tanks.  Some boats had two fuel tanks forward, some had two water tanks there.  Some owners wanted only one tank there so you can find anything there.  Do not assume that yours is what you saw on another boat.  Check the deck fills, they should be accurate as to what is in the tanks.

In painting the dipstick I'd keep the paint above the "full" mark.  Do not paint the lower part where the marks are; you need bare wood to absorb some fluid.  It painted the fuel will just run down the stick and you will not be able to read it.

Have fun, youall.

I checked on the 1960's or so brochure and the tanks, fuel and water, are 130 gallons each.  Bob's word picture is close.  The side of the tank nearest the engine is flat on both ends and top; only the bottom of this face is curved, and that to match the shape of the hull (on top of the bottom frame pieces).  The forward and after faces are 90 degrees to the side facing the engine.  The top is flat with 90 degree corners toward the engine.  The forward face is wider than the after face (I think.  The face toward the engine and it outside counterpart may be parallel but I'm not at all sure about that.)  The thing to remember is that it is smaller on the bottom than on the top.  The amount of fuel in an inch of depth increases as you fill the tank.  I do not remember the gallonage of the forward tanks.  There  may be a mention of them in one issue of the Newporter Eagle; I'll keep my eye out for it.  The forward tanks (under the vee berths) were never, at least in the east, standard items, they were extras.

OK! So take a look at the FUEL TANK STICK READINGS photo that is currently featured. The bottom stick is for the main tanks - ie the one you are dipping. You can see that 19.5" on the stick is equal to 90 gallons. You can take the dowel that you have and mark it according to the photo.

I am sure that the 200gal information is not correct. You can see from the dip stick photo that the tank holds around 130 gal - I have that info for sure and will look it up.  Your auxzillary front tanks have been removed I guess.

The shape of the tank is like this. Right behind the vertical port engine compartment wall is one side. The other of that tank, the outside wall, sort of conforms to the frames - so basically it is a long sort of triangular shape. I will get a photo tomorrow when I go to the boat.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
