Newporter 40 Together

a beautiful boat should sail forever.

Dear Bob and fellow Newporter lovers,

After years of trials and tribulations trying to restore the Sans Souci I came to the conclusion that I had to de-commission her and sell her for parts. I My friend Joe Youcha with the Alexandria Seaport Foundation knows more about wooden boats than anyone I know. He came out and looked at it for me. He told me anything can be fixed with enough time and money. But the fact is I don't have enough of either.

t has been tough, but it was the right decision. I never would have caught up with the rotten wood. When taking her apart I found that 3/4 of the wood looked like new, but anywhere that water got in under the fiberglass it was totally rotten. We could almost pull the pilot house off the deck by hand once we made a few cuts. The afterdeck was all rot as was the upper part of the transom.

That is the biggest problem with the fiberglass covering on a Newporter. You can't tell what is underneath until you take the glass off. I'll send some pictures soon. I hope pictures of the interior structure will help some of you in your restoration process.

I sold all of the deck fittings and engine to a gentleman named Bob Eaton. Bob is building a 41 foot Alden designed plank on frame sailboat and he is using the components from the Sans Souci. So she will live on as as transplant.

He did not use the masts, sails or standing rigging. They are for sale at a very reasonable price. If anyone is interested I'll give you the full sail plan. Good luck and may the wind be at your back.

As you know, justine found your video, so anyone viewing that would know that you loved your boat! I am sorry that it became so overwhelming, but since I am immersed in essentially rebuilding mine from keelson up (and there is no guarantee of my success), I really can understand. Don't abandon the site - Live vicariously with us!!!!
I will keep in touch. I'll also send pictures of the problem areas that were difficult to see. Good luck.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
