Newporter 40 Together

a beautiful boat should sail forever.

The new hatch in the top surface of the Cleopatra gives vastly superior access to the lazarette. It's watertight, sturdy, and large enough to shove a sail bag and most of my handheld power tool boxes into if I like.
There's no comparison between this and the original access hatches really - except for something that might actually be laying directly underneath something else, I can pull out anything from this storage area now just by opening this hatch. This space was previously huge but difficult to make use of.

The hatches are from "Bomar" - after a bad delivery experience where I got broken hatches from another manufacturer (obviously dropped by FedEx - the boxes were all dented on the same corner & edge and all hatches damaged along that same corner/edge) I decided to go with more expensive hatches (because I still felt like the new hatches shouldn't have broken even if dropped) and a more reliable vendor (that would look them over immediately before handing them to me).

I ordered these through West Marine - paid slightly more for Bomar (over SureSeal) but the hatches are of *superior* quality. You can feel the difference in the construction. They do indeed have a double-gasket arrangement where the lid and frame interlock for twice the seal. I feel very good about them being quite watertight.

My thought as I go through modifications on this boat are that a lot of what was there has lasted, quite solidly in most cases, for over 50 years. If somebody has to tear out, rebuild, replace or refit in 50 years from now, I'll have done my job to my own satisfaction (regular maintenance notwithstanding).

Eddie,    A beautiful installation.  It looks as if it may have two gaskets with the frame and lid both having a groove and a lip—with a gasket in each groove and the lips going into the groove of the other part it should be waterproof almost forever.  One other thought.  If I owned a Newporter (or any other boat) I would like to know where you got them, who made them, and any other “etc.”  Keep us up to date, especially with pictures.  Many thanks.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
