a beautiful boat should sail forever.

While there are other methods, I LOVE MAKING TEMPLATES, because you can, with no risk, make them as good as you want, and you know what you will have in the end. These pieces are 4" strips of luan ($13 per sheet). I initially use a stapler (3/8" staples which work great for two strips of 3/16 luan, and only require one hand to apply, and if you feel the need you can come back with clamp or screw - (IN ADDITION TO THE REQUIRED ELMERS GLUE)Its the stapler's one hand fix in place that is their real value) . Be sure to add random cross supports. A small plane is perfect for shaping curves. Scribe first. The beauty of this method is that it just requires one simple piece at a time!! Its really easy once you do a couple - nothing complicated - fool proof. I might mention that there are two different staple events - one to just to hold individual strip in place to begin with, and the next to staple thru two strips at the corner joint where two pieces overlap. The beauty of using a 3/8" staple or two to hold the individual pieces in position in the first place is that once the template is built and the glue is dried, the completed template peels right off with no effort - ie it does not tear apart the delicate template. One last note (that you might not appreciate until you get started). Individual strips only have to represent one surface contour because at the corners the next stapled on strip will represent the new surface contour .

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
