a beautiful boat should sail forever.

So here is a four stroke engine cycle, with each stroke listed. Hopefully everyone understands it, but if you don't, google.
What is important is that each stroke is 180 degrees, or half a rotation. When you look at the picture just think about the front of the engine photo with the arrow on the crank pulley. Right behind the pulley, inside the engine in cylinder No. 1, this is what is happening. So if you knew where the cycle started you could look at the arrow on the crankshaft pulley and know where you were. It would go around twice for every cycle. But how do you know where the cycle starts??? Well, the cycle starts with an intake of fuel, so the No. 1 cylinder intake valve will be down (like the number three intake valve in the valve photo) As you rotate the engine (I use a wrench on the crankshaft, but if the engine fires it could be LETHEL - when I did it the fuel was all drained from engine and there was no fuel injection pump) you will see the no. 1 valve go down, telling you the intake stroke is occurring. If you keep rotating both valves will be shut, and then the exhaust will open, ending the cycle. (see diagram)
When you have rotated about one rotation and both valves are closed you will be near top dead center. Now you have to locate the timing marks on the flywheel (on my engine) and adjust flywheel (which adjust the crank, which times everything) to the specified number of degrees before top dead center. geeze, I am getting worn out. be back later.
All of the above has been so that I could insert my rebuilt fuel injection pump in the correct timing so it would not inject fuel at the wrong time.
Another closely related topic is the initial setting of the valve clearance. The valves make a tight seal on the valve seats when they are closed, and open the correct amount when they are supposed to be open. To start your engine after rebuilding you need to set the initial clearance for when the valves are open ( .014 to .016 - for my engine- using a feeler gauge from auto parts store) The information below the cylinder head top view tells you what valves are open when you should be setting other valves. If all of this is fuzzy it is because it is just to much for me to explain. If you have my engine and have questions just drop me an email. I am not a professional. I am a self taught who is only sharing what he has learned. Maybe right, maybe wrong.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
