BE SURE TO CHECK THAT THE EXISTING PADDING IS SECURE - THE ONE UNDER MY WATER TANK SLIPPED OUT AS I WAS WORKING IN THE AREA.

The forward tank's fill pipes exit through the bulkhead (removed in this photo) attached to the doubled fourth frames. The grey pipe is Schedule 80, 1 1/2" PVC, screwed into a threaded fitting that is fiberglassed into the tank, Standard Pipe Threads). While I was replacing the entrance fuel pipe with stainless steel (a 6" or 8" nipple, and a 4" nipple, both threaded, with a 90 degree elbow, $29,sealed with fuel resistent compound), I stuck my finger in the threaded entrance and found the end wall to be about 1" thick - very sturdy. I found no indication of any interaction between the fuel and the existing PVC. Do not use galvanized pipe because the sulfur in the diesel dissolves the zinc and corrupts the fuel system. The tank appears to be supported only on the ends, but has lasted 50 years that way. I plan to add some very soft additional support as I replace some plywood. Certainly will be careful because it appears the tank was designed to be supported the way it is, and I don't want to stress the tank walls where they are not suposed to be stressed. I will replace the rest of the PVC for the fuel tank with Coast Guard approved rubber hose.
www.proboat.com has great discussion and video on "Diesel Fuel Tank Design and Installation" readily available at their website - look along left margin of opening page.
At a later date I will cut an entrance into the tank on the top, which is readily accessible under the starboard berth, so that I can clean the tank really well. My final goal will be to have a separate filtering system and line on that tank, so that if and when my other tank filter clogs in an emergency I can simply go to my clean forward tank. Certainly this is less complicated and less expensive, and more robust, than the filtration systems that reroute around a clogged filter.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
