a beautiful boat should sail forever.

So this is kind of an arbitrary starting point, specific to my situation, as I explained in the last photo. You can see the 16 foot white batten temporarily fixed to the bottom of the chine, making a fair curve for where the bottom planking joins the side planking - ie also known as "THE CHINE". (the word "chine" meaning the visual and physical break from bottom to side planking on a hard chine hull, as well as the actual physical piece running the length of the boat). This long batten extends forward into a section of the boat that has old frames and bulkheads in place - ie the place where I am going, and confident of the chine line, - so if I follow the batten curve I am assured of getting there in a FAIR (pleasing to the eye) manner.
AHEM! The above is somewhat of an incomplete statement - ie just concerning the fairing of the side of the chine. In the vertical dimension, each frame must be in line with the bulwark and chine. In the horizontal dimension, each frame must smoothly transition to the next frame fwd and aft. I have already done those two procedures. The other batten, the one underneath, was being used the check the bottom frames. The art of making fairing battens and fairing a boat is a book in itself, which I am not qualified to write - so read several authors.
Also, remember that a normal Newporter without planking will not look like this because the normal bulwark STARTS with the outside planking, and then adds two layers of plywood above the deck for the rest of the bulwark after the side planking is on. In this case the bulwark has been redesigned as a stacked bulwark (the five layers of 2x above the deck, and exists in it's on right, ready to receive the side planking).

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
