a beautiful boat should sail forever.

Made an engine mounting template this morning - the mesurementsfor the 172 block I had rebuilt were not the same for the engine mounts on the 192 Osco diagram I posted. The width from center to center of engine mounts is approx. 20 1/4. The height difference between the front and back is 2 1/2", with the back being higher on engine block - i.e. making the rear lower. Considering that the distance between them is approx. 22 5/8 center to center of engine mount holes, you can establish the rise over the run for comparison with the engine beds as well as the shaft log center.
There were two goals for today. To determine the shaft log vertical angle relative to the engine beds, which will allow me to figure out the shim wedges so that the new engine mounts are not distorted - which will effectively over time greatly dimenish their ability to dampen vibrations.
The second goal was to make sure that the engine beds were wide enough and positioned to achieve proper horizontal alignment. The stuffing box (or packing gland) was distorted to one side, and the cutless bearing had spun in the shaft log, both symptomatic of a misaligned engine. I was worried that maybe the shaft log was so off center that it was impossible to get an alignment between the engine and the prop shaft.
Note that the engine bed and mount in the forground are the originals that I was using for reference.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
