Newporter 40 Together

a beautiful boat should sail forever.

Hi, everyone--

The most amazing thing just happened: our virtual connection went real! Jim Benbow of Nelson, NZ, just left our boat to catch the ferry back to Vancouver. He is in Canada for a mixed business-and-pleasure trip and decided to make a stop at Bowen Island to see us and Viajador.

IF we'd been reading our email regularly, we'd have known to expect him, but his visit was a delightful surprise as it turned out. Jim owns 'Sultana', hull no. 75, which he purchased last August.

Jim arrived this afternoon just in time to witness Jasper pulling the alternator, which has ceased to alternate, and so felt instantly at home on board Viajador. He and Jasper were well into the story-swapping by the time I arrived covered in grime from a day in the community garden and made him repeat everything he'd already said.

Jim told us all about the updates on his boat: the taff rail replaced with stainless; a steering station in the deckhouse (hydraulic); a bridge deck across the cockpit that reduces cockpit (water) volume and keeps the deckhouse dry (while increasing storage); all Mar-lon seacocks and through-hulls and roller furling on both staysail and genoa.

We threw some steaks on the barbeque and chatted on through dinner about wooden boats in general and Newporters in particular; and the Canadian Arctic, where we've all spent some time. The 9 pm ferry came all too soon and we had to say goodbye, knowing that we'd just skimmed the surface of all that we share in common with these boats!

And it's only now that I'm writing to share this with you all that I realize I never even thought of taking a photo of us all on board! Rats. It was such a nice evening, too; we could lounge on Cleopatra's couch enjoying the sun, with a nice cool breeze to keep it from becoming uncomfortable. At our latitude, it's still light as I write (9:30 pm) and we won't lose the sun altogether until 10. Definitely the kind of weather our cockpits were designed for!

Jim mentioned that very few of us have put up photos of the interiors of our boats, which is something I've been meaning to do for some time. So, as a memento of our visit, I will take and post some interior shots...as soon as I get everything stowed....

Thanks, Bob, for making a website that could make a connection like this happen!
Cheers,
Karen

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
