a beautiful boat should sail forever.

I'm curious about this windlass. It's the windlass on SoNice and she's not responding.

I'm interested in any information that anyone might have about this particular windlass - manufacturer, operating voltage, horsepower, etc.

As for diagnostics - First: The gearbox is fine. Everything moves smoothly, with the level of resistance I expect.

I've tried connecting power *directly* to the windlass to eliminate possible issues with the wiring (I'm not enthused with the wiring either, but that's not the issue here).

I found the same make/model of windlass at a nearby boat part resale place (Minney's) but of course they know less about the origin than I do.  What they *do* know is that the one they have is a 32v motor. The motor looks a little different from mine, so I can't assume much there: but I'm curious if anyone can verify that this windlass on my boat is 12v (or if they can verify otherwise).

Nothing happens when I apply power. I get current through - and low enough resistance that I ascertain it's probably shorted internally (+/- both show a closed circuit to the housing - resistance is roughly nothing)

So I'm looking at a rewinding or a replacement motor - I don't really want to put a new windlass on: I like this one, except for the whole "motor doesn't work" bit, and would rather spend a couple hundred on a motor than a few thousand on an all-new windlass.

Manufactured by Ideal Windlass. They're still in business and they rebuild their old windlasses. Above is a photo of a rebuilt one. It is model CHWSO.

I'm a happy, happy man - and I'll leave this here so that anyone else with the same windlass on their Newporter can locate the original manufacturer. 

    I know you probably have checked this, but I mention it anyway. Is there some possibility that the positive motor lead is grounding out from bad insulation on the motor housing, so that the current never goes through the motor, but straight to ground. ?  I have an owners manuel if you need any info.

Insulation as it passes through the motor housing looks solid - but the motor housing itself is fairly corroded. I suspect in parts of the motor that aren't as easy to inspect that it's in pretty sad shape.

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
