Newporter 40 Together

a beautiful boat should sail forever.

Cavitation on impeller

Symptoms:

Pieces missing from blade tips especially in centre of impeller.

Edges look hollowed out or eaten away.

Pitting on ends of impeller.

Cause:

Cavitation, i.e. pressure too low at pump inlet, fluid boils locally.

Remedy:

Reduce pump speed.

Increase inlet pipe diameter.

Reduce inlet pipe length and restrictions.

Reduce fluid temperature (vapour pressure).

Dry Run impeller

Symptoms:

End faces hard, polished, cracked, like carbon.

Some or all blades completely missing in severe cases.

Cause:

Dry running.

Remedy:

Do not run for more than 30 seconds without liquid in the pump.

Stop the pump as soon as liquid is exhausted.

Arrange pipework to trap liquid in the pump on the discharge side. Prevents dry running for several minutes.

Provide automatic liquid level/presence sensor.

Worn impeller

Symptoms:

Blades cracked about 1/2 way up their height.

Some pieces of blade missing

Cause:

Normal end of useful life

Excessive outlet pressure reduces impeller life.

Liquid too hot or too cold.

A crease on the trailing side of each blade can also indicate excessive pressure.

Remedy:

Reduce pressure and/or pump speed

Increase outlet pipe diameter.

Reduce outlet pipe length and restrictions.

Can also be due to dry running (2) or swell (4).

Swollen impeller

Symptoms:

Impeller too long, binds in pump.

Blades much longer than hub.

Rubber may feel soft and sticky.

Cause:

Swell due to chemical attack, high temperature or long term immersion.

Remedy:

Check rubber is suitable for all liquids pumped including cleaning agents; see Xylem Jabsco Liquid Compatibility Guide.

Flush out pump after use. Drain for storage.

Reduce liquid temperature.

Avoid dry running (2).

Set impeller

Symptoms:

Blades permanently and excessively curved.

Cause:

Chemical attack

Long term storage in pump.

Normal end of useful life (especially nitrile impellers).

Remedy:

Check chemical compatibility.

Remove impeller for long term storage.

Refit impeller to rotate in the opposite direction.

Cavitation on impeller

Symptoms:

Worn blade tips and end faces.

Worn impeller drive.

Cause:

Cavitation, i.e. pressure too low at pump inlet, fluid boils locally (1).

Remedy:

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Clyde's email:

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
