PLANKING A NEWPORTER

Hello - my name is G-Boy, and I am the yard supervisor. Bob whined a lot building the stacked bulwark, but good help is hard to find. He is cheap!
There are a LOT of things to do to get ready for planking, so this will be a long ongoing album. Here are a few. Fair the hull, determine the material, determine the fastening method, set up scaffolding at the right height, develop scarfing system, develop attachment procedures for minimum manpower.
Materials wise, since I am working alone, and am 64 years young, I am going to use two layers of 3/8" marine plywood. I feel much better about two layers of plywood with offset scarfs than one layer where if one scarf failed it would open the hull up. Also, I can do an eight to one scarf in 3/8" plywood very easily and quickly, whereas a scarf in a 3/4 sheet would require a much greater effort. 3/8's plywood is also a lot easier to aply. The downside is you have to do everything twice with and extra coating of epoxy ($) in between.
I will start with the confession that I have been on a pretty steep learning curve the last few years (still am - but that is the real joy of boatbuilding). So what I have to do at this point is not necessarily what a professional building from scratch would be doing. The whole aft area was a bowl of rot at best, so I rebuilt the whole thing. Transom, apron, floors, frames, deck - each in its on time. By the time I finished there was no original reference point in the transom area. But now all those components I replaced have to be tuned -coordinated - in line - work together, specifically they have to be FAIR. So I start by FAIRING THE HULL IN THE AFT SECTION.
