Is this original?
Hi there. I'm loving all of the pics and info. This is question for Clyde: was this electrical panel original? It's in the pilothouse, port side just inside the companionway. We are going thru all our wiring (blue tape signifies obsolete or non-functioning systems). Just curious.

Haha we thought that might be the case! All the blue tape shows wire we've pulled out, much of it not marine grade, but as we put things back together it will come together. Anyway, I'll get a picture of more of the pilothouse tomorrow, too dark right now. Love all the input! Thank you so much.

The simple answer is NO. Things like that hadn't been thought of back when Newporters were built. It looks like that would cost as much as the raw materials for one boat would have cost the yard (just kidding a little). Looks like you need an electrical/electronics degree to operate that. The primitive panel we installed was at the end of the after dinette seat. Switches and circuit breakers were just above the steps as you enter the doghouse (deckhouse, pilot house) in a most inconvenient spot. Low so it was hard to see and behind the screen door when it was hooked in the open position.
You have a lot of blue strips pasted on there. It looks like its going to be a lot of fun tracing down all those "problems." Even is a circuit seems to look OK, if you find a bit of corrosion on any of the joints in the wiring, take it (them) apart, clean them up, and reassemble. It seems like that corrosion insulates the components of any connection and shuts that circuit off. Corrosion that creeps up a wire under the wire's covering should also be cleaned out. Here's hoping that you are easily able to get all circuits operating properly. It would be a shame to have such a panel with most of it not functioning. A request from Curious Clyde: will you please step back a ways from the panel and snap another picture that shows the panel in all its glory so I can see how it looks among the rest of that part of the boat.

The Ning site has been given a reprieve. I have transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.
Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.
My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail. Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory. Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.
