a beautiful boat should sail forever.

Mizzen Mast Rake ? Or where the hell do I cut hole in new deck?

Well, there is all kinds of esoteric speculation in this dialogue!
First - does the mizzen mast have any RAKE, or angle off from vertical, usually leaning back. I have heard this speculated on sooo many times, but here are the only facts that I know for certain. Where the mizzen mast comes through the cockpit floor is 1 1/2" from the back of the cabin wall to the front of the mizzen. And where it goes through the mast partner clamp, at the top back of the cabin wall, the mizzen mast is 3 1/2" from the wall. Now that is obviously a change of 2" in about 4 feet!!, or, ASSUMING THE BACK OF THE CABIN WALL IS VERTICAL WHEN THE BOAT IS AFLOAT, that means the mast slopes back 2 inches every 4 feet, or an angle of about 2.4 degrees. But you have to remember that the mast is about 38 feet tall. So if you consider the mast partner as a pivot, ie if the step moves one way the mast moves the other, then there is about 8 feet more or less below the pivot and 30 feet above, which means any distance the location of the step is moved results in about four times as much at the top of the mast. Move the step 1 inch, and the top of the mast moves 4" ("roughly" numbers). This becomes really important considering I wasn't quite sure where my step should go. However all that pivot stuff can be forgotten if you just position the mast in the correct position from that for sure information first mentioned, and adjust the step accordingly! Incidentally, the photo is of me locating where the front of the hole for the mizzen is in my new cockpit deck, as well as where the mast step slot for the tenon on the bottom of the mizzen should be, ALL based on the 1 1/2" at the bottom and the 3 1/2" at the top for sure data.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
