The next thing was the chine repair, probably/maybe below the engine vent location - that area was just a disaster on deck. ( I didn't take the tarps off to look) As you know, I have done three chine repairs, actually 4, some of which were 10 to 12 inch scarfs on each end, and the other two were backer blocked. The long scarfs are just not worth the trouble and time, so I blocked this one, and felt good about it. I did put a 30 degree bevel at each end of the 3/4 plywood layer of the chine. Of course the backer blocks can only be so long because the frames go in place. One thing about the chine - if the glue is not totally gone (between the chine and the planking) you can kind of expect to tear up the outer douglas fir layer of the chine. (see featured diagram by Clyde Phillips) In the area containing the engine compartment, where the frames were bad and the planking had to come off because the fuel and water tanks prevented access from the inside of the boat, I will replace a long length of the doug fir outer layer of the chine. This in effect will act as a scarf on its own.
One might note the grove in the deadwood down below in the right of the picture. This is where one of six 5/8" threaded rods (three on each side) go that keep the deadwood together beyond the ballast keel's 9 bronze bolts, the last two of which are in the forward half of the engine compartment. (The deadwood is made up of a few doug fir beams that are glued and held together by these rods and the 3/4 plywood sheathing covering the deadwood.)
I also got the first new frame totally glued up. Note the half lap joint, instead of finger joint in the next lower frame member forward. friend bob

THE ROSTER
Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it. But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are. We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners. Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter sites:
and
The Ning site has been given a reprieve. I have transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.
Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.
My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail. Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory. Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.
If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
Clyde's email:
Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line. Email is the best way to contact me. I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system. Email will get to me post-haste.
