Newporter 40 Together

a beautiful boat should sail forever.

Boat Owner and Survey History for Hull #113

I am now working on the engine, and am trying to get a handle on when

it was replaced, rebuilt, hours run, etc., so am working my way back through the surveys in my archives.

Originally purchased by Andrew Duncan in 1967, of Cleveland, Ohio, with

home port listed as Kingston, Jamaica. Was originally named "Lovely Lady". An old Newporter Directory indicates Richard Hutton bought it 1971.

04/23/85 Owner Richard Hutton, Huntington, New York

Survey done in Fort Lauderdale while boat hauled out at

Summerfield's Boat Yard by L. F. Hamlin. Even at this point

there were several areas of dry rot to be repaired, including

the keelson under the main salon sole (which I am going to

attempt to rebuild this summer), as well as the mast below the

spreader, which I would say never really got repaired well

enough to prevent their later rotting away. Several repairs were

made and overall survey was positive. While this survey does

not state a new 192DF engine had been installed in 1977,

it does list the engine, and I have a folder that does state new engine

installed and keeps up with operating hours. Engine S.N. is D5JL6007V4

(same as 96 survey) Present Value (1985)was $62,000 with replacement

value $120,000. Name at time "Lady Marian".

05/21/85 Boat purchased by Leonard L. Wilson for $50,000 from Moser

Yacht Sales in Stuart, Florida. Mr. Wilson kept boat at Marina

del Ray, North Shore Lake Pontchartrain, La. He had renamed

the boat "Fireweed". The boat was for sale for $59,000 some

time after Dec. 1986 (mentioned as haul out date).

07/93 George Maattanen puchases boat for $40,000, and renames

it "Between the Sheets". Have insurance policy he purchased

in 1996 where boat is now docked at Hales Bar Marina on

Tennessee River, close to Chattanooga. A Coast Guard

Certificate of Documentation indicates Maattanen still owned

thge boat in 2004.

01/07/96 Maattanern has survey done by Bill Clingman, inspected

out of the water at Sale Creek Marina, a location that I have

kept another sale boat at before. The photos of the hull look

good. SURVEY STATES THAT ENGINE REPLACED

IN 1977 WITH A OSCO FORD DIESEL MODEL NO.

192 DF (65 HORSE) AND A BORG WARNER

HYDRAULIC TRANSMISSION WITH 2 TO 1

REDUCTION GEAR. (MODEL A-57-71CR, S.N.

10679). ENGINE SERIAL NUMBER D5JL6007V4.

PROP SHAFT REPLACED WITH 1 AND 1/4"

STAINLESS. PROP IS 21" BY 11".

SURVEY ALSO STATES MAIN DIESEL ENGINE

COMPLETELY REBUILT, WITH NEW CRANK

SHAFT, PISTONS, RINGS, BEARINGS, INJECTOR

PUMP REBUILT, ETC. !!~!!! (at time of survey)

Appraised value: $65,000 Replacement $ 150,000

11/2005 Repair reciepts indicate that Carl Guess now owns the

boat, and has renamed it "Wilson".

11/15/2010 I bought it from Carl

on May 15, 2008.

I stumbled on a cool piece of info the other night as I was going through my engine material.

It is a confirmation that the engine was actually replaced! If you take a look at the top left graph you can see where a previous owner sketched in the bhp to rpms graph and wrote "previous engine" (a 172 ford osco.)

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
