Please remember that not all of my "rigging drawings" are of use; one depicts the layout of the bench in my rigging loft on which I cut the standing rigging to length.  All it shows are the relative locations of the pins driven into the bench of each piece of rigging.  Lengths are not given because once the bench is set up correctly you do not need to know the actual length.  It's a process of measuring once and cutting many times.

Remember also that I drew these only for me to maintain my memory.  These are not pictures to train new riggers.  But there is a lot of information on the drawings to be of help to other people.

One final note that covers most of the measurements on the Newporters.  The "current measurement" of any piece of wood, wire, rope, or whatever was always up for grabs.  I remember at one point that the length of the main mast changed almost drastically.  This also changed the lengths of the standing rigging associated with that mast.  Assuming that the tangs for the lower shrouds and the forestay stayed at the same site, it would not change the lower shroud lengths.  But the jib stay, the upper shrouds, and the spring stay all where changed in length and they had to be changed.

As far as I know all the priceless diagrams come from Captain Clyde, who actually worked at the Newporter boat yard on the East Coast. There are several more Newporter diagrams. It would certainly be worth your time to review the information on his two websites (link in lower right of Main page). Also you can use the search engine in upper right corner of this site to access mast rebuild photos and experiences.   ALL INFORMATION YOU NEED IS ON THIS SITE AND Clyde's SITE.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
