a beautiful boat should sail forever.

I have to say, what appeared simple on paper took me a while to master in reality. And looking at the system, the final product is remarkably simple. However, each little part had it's own conceptual behavior, as well as how the whole interdependent system had to be set up for any individual parts to be analyzed. I learned a lot!
A perfect example of the interdependence of the system is the Shurflo diaphragm pump (A) which supplies the pressure to the system. The fundamental idea of a pressurized water system is that a pump turns on at a specific low pressure setting, and off at a specific high pressure setting, giving a very small pressure range at which you can turn on the water without the pump coming on (an "accumulator" extends the time that the you can draw water without the pump coming on - more on the shortly). In contrast to this type "pressure range" system, there are variable speed pumps that come on immediately and run the whole time the water is being drawn. I chose the pressure range system because two working pressure range pumps came with the boat.
The high end of the pressure range on a Shurflo pump is set by an adjustment screw in the center of the top. When installing the components of the system I paid maximum attention to easy accessibility. To check the pressure I used a tire pressure gauge on the accumulator, but several conditions must be met before this can be done. (next photo discussion - impossible to explain everything at once). The high end pressure ("cut out pressure") is set at 45 psi, and the low end setting ("cut in pressure") is an automatic default setting 15 psi lower than your high end setting - so in this case it would be 30 psi. That pressure range is good for about a liter of water before the pump comes on.
At "B" two blue PEX tubes enter my homemade manifold. Those are from the 100 gal. aft water tank on stb side and the 50 gal fwd tank on the port side. Each line has a shut off ball valve right outside the tank, so that you can choose which tank you want, or both, or shut off both to work on system. Down below B is a jerry can full of water because my tanks are empty after chlorox treatment and draining. I have a 6 gallon water heater that had to be filled. Basically the whole system after the pump has to be full off water and purged of air. So while the pump says "self priming" I think that is under "open ended" conditions, i.e. no pressure in the system. Therefore to get the pump to self prime during the process of filling the system, after the first try you may have to open a faucet so back pressure won't prevent self priming. Also, there can be no air leaks before the pump, or the pump cannot develop the suction necessary to self prime. These are examples of obvious system condition concepts that I had to realize in real time.
So the two tank valves are shut off, and that leaves the two lower tubes (C) in the jerry can to supply water. One of these is for a whale manual foot pump for the galley, and the other is for adding NON LETHAL RV WINTERIZING treatments to the system (although I just plan to drain it if I need to).
The two tubes at D are the hot and cold water that run under the sole over to the head.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
