a beautiful boat should sail forever.

OF ALL THE THINGS I MAKE DISCLAIMERS ABOUT THIS ONE IS THE STRONGEST. I IN NO WAY KNOW THAT THIS IS THE CORRECT THING TO DO!!!!!!!
That said, I will say I have read a lot of articles and data - and many of them present conflicting views as well. Like "bleeding off charge" to prevent strikes, like strikes cannot be prevented and the lightning rod attracts lightning.........it goes on and on and on. A particular scary aspect is the tendency off lightning to arc in unexpected paths, like through people and expensive equipment. You can spend an incredible amount of money trying to high tech your way out of lightning damage to pricey instruments and communication. But I am a KISS advocate, just trying to get his boat in the water.
So I took a somewhat intuitive approach based on the idea that lightning will PROBABLY take the most direct path (least resistance) to ground, which in our case is the water. WHETHER OR NOT WE CAN FIGURE OUT THAT PATH IS ANOTHER MATTER. So my intent was to create what I thought was the most direct path to the water, and encourage the lightning not to deviate from that path. A 5/8" sharpened copper rod at top of main mounted on fiberglassed (insulated) right angle brackets bolted to the mast head gear. i.e. the rod, and for that matter the whole grounding system, is isolated from the standing rigging. MANY PEOPLE DISAGREE WITH THIS APPROACH. IF THE LIGHTNING JUMPS OFF PATH TO THE RIGGING IT CAN BLOW A HOLE IN THE SIDE OF THE BOAT!!!!!!
The copper rod enters grey plastic conduit before it gets to mast top level, and 2 feet lower attaches to a number 4 cable, also in the conduit - ie the system is in plastic conduit all the way down to a 5/8" copper rod that is drifted into the lead keel. If you take a look at the photo, the center of the copper strip is located at the base of the mast. There is ANOTHER identical strip on the other side, so the end of the grounding rod into the lead keel is essentially between the two center silicon bolts that hold the strips on. I am using strips instead of a rectangle or square because some authorities think edges increase the effectiveness of the grounding plate. ONCE AGAIN, I DON'T RECCOMEND ANY OF THIS. IN THE ORIGINAL NEWPORTER SySTEM THE CHAINPLATES WERE GROUNDED WITH COPPER WIRE TO A GROUND IN THE BILGE.
I may be, in the future, convinced that I need to ground the chain plates, which would be easy to do with this system. It is my opinion that there is a lot going on in lightning protection beyond what even the authorities know. I will let you (maybe) if this system strikes out.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

newporters.blogspot.com

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.

Put 'Newporter' on Subject Line.  Email is the best way to contact me.  I do not regularly look at this site or its messaging system.  Email will get to me post-haste.
