a beautiful boat should sail forever.

When I originally started developing my fuel system and filtration two thing became obvious. 1) flared copper tubing was iffy, and a pain in the ass, and rubber fuel lines have come a LONG way since 1967. So I switched to a barbed 5/16 Trident rubber fuel line. 2) My tanks were 50 years old, and never cleaned, and the diesel was at least ten years old. So my first approach was to make a complicated redundant double fuel filtration system that I could switch at a moments notice. But damn all those filters take a lot of room. As I was beginning to build my filtration/fuel system I realized the real value of all the work adding clean out access plates to the tanks....I didn't need all that duplicity! One 20 micron filter and one 5 micron filter would do fine (especially since they are rated at 60 to 90 gallons an hour - as opposed to me burning that amount in 3 or 4 days with my ford Osco 172 ) I chose these filters because Cummings had the bracket and head system for $80, and the filters were readily available at any auto parts store FOR $30 (eight years ago they were $14 - lets hear it for Ben Bernake. I HATE BEING CAPTIVE TO THE MARINE bs MARK UP.
I investigated several locations for the filters and the selection valves and the micro pump, but none did what I wanted - super easy access. Then I noticed this location above the steps going into the main cabin ( the green in the background is the valve cover). Originally this space was for drawers to hold silverware - but hey - forks and spoons don't create problems like the fuel system. The selection valves go on left wall and the micro pump on the right, after the filters BECAUSE electric fuel pumps break the water in the fuel into particles the filters may not catch, so the water separation filters become useless. After I make sure all the components fit, I will take them down, finish the cabinet, and fiberglass the inside so that diesel is easy to clean up.
Day later, Back again, Almost finished. Got a few hose clamps to install, and the actual fuel line to the engine, which comes off the micro pump, still has to be installed, as well as the return line which goes to the selector valves. Some hoses are loos. I haven't done those because I am testing my engine this weekend with a portable fuel supply. Will finish cabinet down the road.

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
