Newporter 40 Together

a beautiful boat should sail forever.

Here is the Captain Clyde diagram I was looking for. As far as I can tell, this is the actual Newporter layout.

This drawing leaves out some detail.  Most obvious is the forward end with its packing box attached that also uses the water that enters the shaft alley through the "Intake Tubes."  This diagram is a look from above, looking down. The propeller shaft is also missing but its diameter is the width of the inside diameter of the Cutlass Bearing and continues to the gear box just ahead of the packing box.

You will note that the outboard ends of the intake tubes are trimmed to a 45 degree angle and mounted with the opening facing forward.  This is to scoop up some sea water and transfer to inside the shaft alley.  Since these are always open there is a continual supply of seawater coming into the shaft alley, under enough pressure to cause the water to be forced out both ends.  This escaping water has two jobs to do before it escapes back to the open sea.  It cools the shaft where heat is built up in both the stern tube and the packing box and it is a lubricant that helps it not seize up and cause some interesting damage.  It is therefore necessary to check these intakes on every haul out just as you should check your packing box.

One final note:  The inboard end of the Intake Tubes show them flush to the inside surface of the stern tube.  It might be better to install them so that they protrude into the shaft alley a little.  If you draw in the propeller shaft you will see there is plenty of room.  This will make for a better, stronger, installation.  Remember, there is no scale to most all my drawings.

Enjoy, and Fair Winds!

THE ROSTER

Muf, our Keeper of the Roster, has updated it.  But he still needs information on boats out there that he doesn't have, like new owners, old owners, where any of the boats are.  We don't post the roster on the web site, it is only sent to owners.  Please send him anything you might have, or call him at:

Captain Clyde's Newporter  sites:

and

newporter.ning.com

The Ning site has been given a reprieve.   I have  transferred my Ning site to the blogspot site and will leave it there. I am keeping my Ning site open as a home for my photos and drawings.

Many of my photos there do not relate to Newporters, but a search through my collection may prove useful for your studies.

My drawings are not accurate in many respects as a result of the PAINT program used to draw them, There is no accurate scale and at best they are only useful to indicate some specific detail.  Some are inaccurate because of my poor memory.  Use them to help you think, not as a detailed presentation of the subject matter.

If any of you want to start a web site I suggest you remember what has happened to both my Ning site and this site (which is a Ning site) and remember that my Blogspot site is free and Blogspot's owner (Google) has promised to keep it that way.
