I will try to explain the spacing in the next photos. The main point here is that the old windlass needs this spacing and maybe the new ones don't.
THE BOTTOM LINE FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND IS THAT NIETHER THE NEW IDEAL WINDLASS OWNERS, NOR THE WESTERN MOTORS, KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS CRITICAL SPACER. I will continue to work on the project and post what I find.
